2019 Festival Poets
Nico Amador
Nico Amador is a writer, educator and community organizer who lives in Vermont by way of San Diego and Philadelphia. His poems have appeared in Poets Reading the News, Poet Lore, Bedfellows, Plenitude, Nimrod International Journal, APIARY Magazine, and are forthcoming in Bettering American Poetry, Vol. 3. His chapbook, Flower Wars, was selected as the winner of the Anzaldúa Poetry Prize and was published by Newfound Pressin 2017. He is an alumnus of The Home School and the Lambda Literary Foundation’s Writers Retreat, serves as poetry editor at Thread Makes Blanket Press and helped co-found the Rogue Writing Workshop of Philadelphia, which provides workshop instruction with accomplished poets to those writing and learning outside of academic institutions.

Francisco Aragón
Francisco Aragón is the son of Nicaraguan immigrants. A native of San Francisco, California, he resided in Spain for ten years. David Baker

Two collections of his poetry have appeared in Europe: Omul Alchimic / Alchemical Man(Vinea Editions, 2009, translated into Romanian by Chris Tanasescu) and Treatise on Touch: Selected Poems(Arc Publications, 2007, UK). Among his awards are prizes and grants from the Guggenheim Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, Mellon Foundation, and Society of Midland Authors. He holds the Thomas B. Fordham Chair at Denison University, in Granville, Ohio, and is Poetry Editor of The Kenyon Review.

Richard Blanco
Richard Blanco was selected by President Obama to serve as the fifth Inaugural Poet in US history. Born in Madrid to Cuban exile parents and raised in Miami, the negotiation of cultural identity characterizes his three collections of poetry: City of a Hundred Fires; Directions to The Beach of the Dead;and Looking for The Gulf Motel. He has also authored the memoirs For All of Us, One Todayand The Prince of Los Cocuyos: A Miami Childhood. He is a Woodrow Wilson Fellow, has received numerous honorary doctorates, and is the current Education Ambassador for the Academy of American Poets.

Peg Boyers
Peg Boyers is the author of three books published by the University of Chicago Press: Hard Bread(2002), Honey With Tobacco(2007) and To Forget Venice(2015). She is the Executive Editor of the American quarterly Salgamundiand teaches at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York. Her work appears in such publications as The Paris Review,The New Republic, The Harvard Reviewand many other publications. She is also a translator of Spanish and Italian literature into English. Her most recent publication is the “Afterword” to the New York Review of Booksedition of Natalia Ginzburg’s Family Lexicon(2016).

Jericho Brown is the recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Brown’s first book,Please(New Issues 2008), won the American Book Award. His second book, The New Testament(Copper Canyon 2014), won the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award. His most recent collection is The Tradition(Copper Canyon in 2019). His poems have appeared in Buzzfeed, The New Republic, The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Paris Review, TIME magazine, Tin House, and several volumes of The Best American Poetry. He is an associate professor and the director of the Creative Writing Program at Emory University.

Rafael Carvajal was born in Malaga Spain but at age twelve he emigrated to the United States. He returned to Spain in 1995 and has published three books there: Mi Psicologa Me Dice Que Se Jubila, Misántropo con Buen Corazony Nueve Odas. At present he lives in Madrid, Spain.

Winner of the “Discovery” / Boston ReviewPoetry Prize and a former Wallace Stegner Fellow at Stanford University, he currently teaches in Atlanta, Georgia, where he lives with his wife and sons.

Easter has been honored by Bush and McKnight fellowships and the Loft Creative Non-Fiction Award.

Kit Fan
Kit Fan was born in Hong Kong and moved to the UK at the age of 21. He studied at the Chinese University of Hong Kong before completing a PhD on Thom Gunn at the University of York. As well as being a published poet, he also writes fiction. In 2017 and 2018 he was shortlisted for the Guardian 4th Estate BAME Short Story Prize for ‘Duty Free’ and ‘City of Culture’. He was shortlisted for the TLS Mick Imlah Poetry Prize 2017. In 2018 he won a Northern Writers’ Award for Diamond Hill, a novel-in-progress set in 1997, portraying the struggles of a deprived community in the last shanty town in Hong Kong during the handover from Britain to China. His first book of poems, Paper Scissors Stone, won the inaugural HKU International Poetry Prize in 2011 and his translation of Classical Chinese poetry won one of the Times Stephen Spender Prizes in 2006. His second book of poems, As Slow As Possible,was a Poetry Book Society Recommendation and chosen by The Guardianas one of the 50 biggest books in Autumn 2018. He lives in York and works in the Hull York Medical School.

A winner of the RATTLEPoetry Prize, he teaches at Columbia University and Manhattanville College. He serves on the Editorial Board of Alice James Books and is the curator of The American Poem Series.

Her first collection, Famous,won the Prairie Schooner Book Prize and was named a Notable Book by the American Library Association. Her other awards include fellowships from Artist Trust and the National Endowment for the Arts, and a Pushcart Prize. She served as Washington State Poet Laureate from 2012 to 2014.

Livia Franchini is a writer and translator from Tuscany, Italy. She has translated Michael Donaghy, Sam Riviere and James Tiptree Jr. among many others. Her first poetry pamphlet, our available magic, is forthcoming in Spring 2019 from Makina Books. Her debut novel Shelf Life will be published by Doubleday in the U.K. and Mondadori in Italy in August 2019 and Spring 2020. She lives in London, where she is completing a PhD in experimental women’s writing at Goldsmiths.

Dana Gioia is the Poet Laureate of California. He is the author of five collections of poetry, including Interrogations at Noon(2001), which won the American Book Award, and 99 Poems: New & Selected(2016), which won the Poets’ Prize. His three critical collections include Can Poetry Matter?(1992), which was a finalist for the National Book Critics Award. Gioia has written four opera libretti and edited twenty literary anthologies. He served as Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts from 2003 to 2009 where he helped create one of the largest federal art programs in American history. He holds the Judge Widney Chair of Poetry and Public Culture at the University of Southern California.

Christian Gullette’s poems have appeared in journals such as the New England Review, Smartish Pace, and Meridian, and he was a finalist for the Iowa Review Poetry Award and a semi-finalist for the Discovery/Boston Review Poetry Contest. His translations from the Swedish have appeared or are forthcoming in the Colorado Review, Words Without Borders, and Queen Mob’s Tea House. He also serves as the senior poetry editor for the Cortland Review. Christian recently received his PhD in Scandinavian Languages and Literatures from the University of California, Berkeley, where he is currently a Lecturer in translation theory and practice.

During his tenure, the Fulbright Program was awarded Spain’s prestigious Prince of Asturias Award, presented by the King of Spain. He lives in New York and Miami.

Travis Helms is an Episcopal Priest serving in Austin, TX. He is founder and curator of LOGOS Poetry Collective: a ‘liturgically-inflected’ reading series / workshop community that meets in an East Austin Brewery – and works to cultivate meaningful conversation around poetry, theology and the Imagination. Travis was the inaugural William W. Cook Frost Place Fellow (Franconia, NH), runner-up for the John Kinsella / Tracy Ryan Poetry Prize and winner of the Arthur Sale Poetry Prize (Cambridge, UK). As of now, his poems have appeared in The New Haven Reviewand Noesis. He recently completed a PhD, with a dissertation focused on theological elements in the work of Emerson, Whitman, Stevens and Crane.

John Koethe is the author of several collections of poetry, including North Point North: New and Selected(2002), Ninety-fifth Street(2009), ROTC Kills(2012), and The Swimmer(2016). Orlando Ricardo Menes
Orlando Ricardo Menes teaches in the Creative Writing Program at the University of Notre Dame. He is the author of six poetry collections, most recently Heresies(University of New Mexico Press, 2015) and the forthcoming Memoria (Louisiana State University Press, 2019). He was born in Lima, Peru, to Cuban parents, living there until the age ten when his family moved to Miami. He also lived in Madrid during the last two years of the Franco dictatorship. Both of his grandfathers immigrated to Cuba in the early 1900’s, one from Asturias and the other from Catalonia.

Naomi Mulvihill
Naomi Mulvihill is a poet and public-school teacher. She was a Seven-Month Poetry Fellow at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, MA (2013-2014). Her poems have been published in a variety of journals including the Kenyon Review Online, New Orleans Review, Green Mountains Review, CutBankand West Branch. Her essays on poetry and education have been published in The Writer’s Chronicle and The Harvard Educational Review. For the last 25 years, she’s worked in the field of bilingual education. As a veteran teacher in the Boston Public Schools, she’s been recognized both locally and nationally for her work with children and their families.

Pádraig Ó Tuama is a poet from Ireland. With interests in language, conflict and religion, his poetry often centres around how religious text, experiences of conflict and questions of the past can speak to each other. His work has been featured on the BBC, RTÉ (Ireland), ABC (Australia), NPR (USA), and his poetry has been published on AAP’s Poem-A-Day, Post Road, Seminary Ridge Review, Imageand On Being. He has published four books: Readings from the Book of Exile(2012), Sorry for Your Troubles(2013), In the Shelter(2015) and Daily Prayer(2017). A new work — There is No Such Thing as the Past — is forthcoming. A regular broadcaster, as well as lecturer and retreat-leader on matters to do with poetry, religion and conflict, Ó Tuama’s work has won acclaim from fields of psychoanalysis, theology and peace studies.

Dana Prescott, Executive Director of Civitella Ranieri Foundation, is a writer, painter, and educator who has lived and worked in Italy for most of the past 30 years. Author of Around Rome with Kids, her travel writing has been published in the Washington Post, The Seattle Times, and the Christian Science Monitor, among others. Her poems have appeared in The Bennington Review and The Journal for Poetic Research. Spencer Reece is the author of The Clerk’s Tale and The Road to Emmaus, a long-list nominee for the National Book Award in 2014. In 2017, he edited Counting Time Like People Count Stars, an anthology of poetry by the orphaned girls of Our Little Roses in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. The Secret Gospel of Mark: A Poet´s Memoir, a forthcoming nonfiction book combines the author´s life story with an appreciation of poets: Sylvia Plath, Elizabeth Bishop, George Herbert, James Merrill, Emily Dickinson, Gerard Manley Hopkins, Mark Strand, Richard Blanco, and Greg Pardlo. The Wylie Agencywill represent the book to publishers, and it is hoped the book will come out in 2020. Reece is an ordained Episcopal priest and works as the canon to the ordinary for the Bishop of the Spanish Episcopal Church.

She teaches at the University of Utah and is Utah’s Poet Laureate.

Patrick Rosal is a writer and interdisciplinary artist. He is the author of four books of poetry, most recently Brooklyn Antediluvian (Persea Books, 2016), which was a finalist for the Kingsley Tufts award and winner of the Lenore Marshal Prize from the Academy of American Poets. The recipient of fellowships from the Civitella Ranieri Foundation, John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Fulbright Research Program. He is Associate Professor of English at Rutgers University-Camden.

She holds degrees in English and creative writing from Louisiana State, New York University, and the University of Houston, and a Master of Divinity from Yale Divinity School. A native of south Louisiana, she remains active in efforts to restore Louisiana’s wetlands. She teaches in the Creative Writing Program at The University of Houston.

The daughter of Korean immigrants and a former lawyer, she is a member of the curatorial group The Racial Imaginary Instituteand teaches at Princeton.
